Spring fashion is in full swing, and Summer’s photogenic, island-inspired graphic prints are being seen on fashions to wear for the office, casual playdates or evening time. Take your inspiration from our favorite Spring/Summer 2012 runways by mixing and matching beach prints and tribal patterns with classic pieces you already own.

Is Mother-Child J. Crew Ad Promoting Trandsgender?

Jenna Lyons, the  creative mastermind behind the now-stylish J.  Crew label we all know and love, has done much more than the average company President and Creative Director.  Lyons is credited with heading the brand’s transformation from dull-colored mail order fashion to some of the hippest, couture-looking fashion ever found in a chain store.  Jenna’s workday (and extremely colorful closet) was profiled by Oprah in April 2010.  Her work is also patronized by J. Crew fans Michelle Obama and her girls.  Last week, J. Crew sent emails to customers circulating the latest ad for the comany’s Crewcuts childrenswear.  It features a grinning Jenna with her son Beckett, age 5.   The adorable blonde boy is wearing a striped shirt and sporting a shocking pink pedicure evidently painted by Mom.

Transgender.. or just cute?

Lyon’s focus in the ad clearly stays with the nail polish, reading “Lucking for me, I ended up with a boy whose favorite color is pink.  Toenail painting is way more fun in neon.”   The ad has undergone scrutiny from both media and child psychologists, calling it “blatant propaganda” that can add to gender confusion for children, especially, boys, in the future.  Ms. Lyons has defended her mom and son ad to Fox News, stating that her critics are simply “overreacting.”.  “Most parents”, Lyons explains, “in the privacy of their home might think, ‘What’s the big deal?’ “.

Designing Moms

As International Fashion Weeks come to a close, it’s time to reflect on the many women of fashion– and we’re not talking models!  Our favorite fashionistas play the role of designing the runway’s most popular collections while living the life of full-time mom.  Check out their apparel inspirations plus the latest looks for upcoming Spring 2011:

Victoria Beckham

The ultra-posh VB was the talk of New York’s recent Fashion Week, politely unveiling her Spring and Summer Collections of dresses and sunglasses (effectively named Victoria Beckham) to an intimate army of fashion elite.  Getting rave reviews from the likes of Rachel Zoe and Barneys Creative Director Simon Doonan, the former Spice Girl’s distinctive resume is that of a designer, couture muse and mother to boys Brooklyn, Cruz and Romeo (below, in early 2010).

Gwen Stefani

Known for her quirky, colorful looks that are the perfect example of punk-glam, the platinum-haired Stefani first debuted her collection Love, Angel, Music, Baby (aka L.A.M.B) in 2003.  Preceding her Spring/Summer ’11 show at NY Fashion Week,  Gwen enthusiastically explained to Styleite: “My kids are the whole reason I started L.A.M.B..  I wanted a creative outlet and to still have my kids around”.

Stacey Bendet

The wildly creative designer and co-founder of Alice + Olivia (with partner Andrew Rosen) made her collection famous upon the debut of striped bell bottoms.  Following a whirlwind of critical acclaim, Stacey’s fashion-star status led to Alice + Olivia Kids,  an equally stylish line enjoyed by mini fashion mavens Suri Cruise and Bendet’s own daughter Eloise, now 22 months.   What’s next?  Stacey and husband Eric Bendet recently announced they are expecting child #2.. and an A+O shoe line in 2011!
