The Kardashian Kard — What Do You Think?

Yes, we may love The Kardashians…. but do we really love their credit card for kids?

Lots of opinions have circulated (rom both the media and families) about the recently launched, prepaid Mastercard launched less than two weeks ago by The Kardashians.   Effectively named The Kardashian Kard, this regular-looking credit card is dolled up  with a photo of Kourtney, Kim and Khloe K  decked out in typical coordinating fashion.  The credit card uses the immense popularity of the socialite trio in an effort to promote responsible spending amongst the teenage set.  After all, the card’s campaign bears the promising slogan “Take Us With You.  Anywhere.”

Now, there is nothing bad about promoting safe spending..  especially in an era which has seen such drastic recession (we’re sure Mrs. Kardashian, as well as younger moms Kourtney and Khloe, will agree).  What some might find discouraging about the Kardashian Kard is the amount of listed fees involved with using it for functions such as bill pay, money withdrawals and of course, the initial purchase of this card.

  • The prepaid Kardashian Kard requires an initial purchse of 6 months worth of fees )$59.95) or 1 year’s worth ($99.95).  This does not include money loaded onto the card.
  • After the purchase period, a $7.95 monthly fee applies.
  • $1-$2 fees for reloads, purchase declines, live customer service and more.

A full list of the credit card’s fees is available at the website

Another concern is the fact that your teens can easily download a form authorizing nearly any employer to fund the card via Direct Deposit — which greatly increases their risk of blowing an entire paycheck using this pretty plastic.  This doesn’t mean the Kardashian Kard is not a great way to track your childrens’ spending (and for them to feed their pop culture obsession).  However, it is probably best to do a little research for a prepaid credit card that won’t subject them to excessive fees.
